Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse


I love a good date night.

And anywhere that involves proper steak and potatoes, John loves too.

We recently came across  Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse while researching high end steakhouses in the city.  It had great reviews and we got a kick out of watching them make the tableside Caesar salad.


So Friday night I curled my hair, put on my best vest, and we walked to the restaurant.

Although we go out for dinner on King Street West all of the time, we'd never noticed the restaurant tucked off the main drag on Brant Street.

We walked inside and downstairs, and the hostess led us through the piano bar, upstairs past a big dining room and steak fridge, and into a more private dining room towards the back.


The place is sprawling and cozy.  I was surprised by the size of it considering we had tried to make reservations the week before and they were full.

It had a nice feel and I know we'll be back in winter when the sidewalks are covered in snow and all we can think about is a juicy steak and a bottle of red between the two of us.

After we ordered the waiter brought out a fresh popover roll for John.  He apologized politely for not having a gluten free option for me.


They don't mess around with their steak menu here.

The least expensive steak on the menu is a high quality filet mignon, and ranged all the way up to a $1000 cut that day (the menu changes daily).  I suggested we hold off on that one.

I was craving fish so I ordered the European sea bass with sauce verte while John ordered the filet mignon.  You order your sides separately here, so I chose the rapini with anchovy butter and chili flakes, and John ordered the potato gratin.


Before our meals arrived the waiter brought over a plate with a selection of three sea salts, and another plate with a selection of chimichurri sauce, a blue cheese and bacon spread, and a ponzu sauce.

We curiously snuck a taste before our mains arrived, and were especially taken with the soft blue cheese and bacon spread.

Our mains arrived promptly in cast iron dishes, cooked to perfection.

The steak and the fish were both crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  The potato gratin was rich and indulgent, and the rapini went perfectly with the salty anchovy butter to cut the bitterness.

We ended the meal with an espresso and were brought two fresh muffins wrapped up for breakfast the next day.

I loved all of the small touches, and it was a nice reminder of the great meal we had the night before when John dug into one the next morning.

We'll be back.

Food: Elegant, well cooked, delicious and thoughtfully served. Ambience: Semi-formal with a very well trained wait staff.  Good for a date night or special occasion. Price: Expensive but well worth it.
