Best Bites of Toronto

bitethisimage As I prepare to leave Toronto I want to pay tribute to my favourite places to eat and drink in the city.

I put together a list of my personal top 10.  The city has a lot to offer beyond this, but these are the things that I will miss the most.

Best Hangover Food: Origin's Spanish Fries and Ranchero Eggs

I was so happy when Chef Claudio Aprile opened Origin on King West and then Liberty Village.  I love the small bites and cocktails, but especially the brunch.  If you're feeling a little sore after a fun night out there is no better cure than the naughty Spanish Fries and Ranchero Eggs with a mimosa or Corpse Reviver cocktail.

Best Cocktail: Bar Isabel's Last Word

Michael Webster makes one killer cocktail, including my favourite Last Word.  Love the neighborhood vibe, food from owner and former Black Hoof Chef Grant van Gameran, the vintage cocktail glasses and overall attention to detail.

Best Charcuterie: Richmond Station

I have a lot of respect for Chef Carl Heinrich after working with him on Top Chef Canada.  Heinrich and Ryan Donovan make their own charcuterie because they buy the animals whole and butcher them in house.  The extra fat and trimmings makes for some killer salami and mortadella.

Best Steakhouse: Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse

Polished service, great steak, an extensive wine list and comfortable atmosphere.  Everything you need in a steakhouse.  Elegant without being stuffy.

Best Coffee: Rooster Coffee House

I love everything about this place.  The cozy interior, the smiling baristas, the gluten free muffins, the opening hours (7 a.m. 7 days a week) and the delicious flat whites.

Best Pastries: Nadège

Nadège Nourian is the chef and owner of Nadège Patisserie.  Her pastries are the closest you'll ever get to Paris in Canada. Prior to opening her patisseries in Toronto, Nadège has worked along side MOF’s in patisseries in France and in world renowned and Michelin-starred restaurants.  Nadege imports both the almond flour and most of the fillings for their 10 daily macarons.

Best Sushi: Toshi Sushi

Traditional Japanese sushi and a range of a traditional izakaya in a quiet, unpretentious setting.  The miso scallops are exquisite.

Toshi Sushi

Best Wine Bar: Midfield Wine Bar & Tavern

This laid back wine bar on Dundas West feels like Europe.  Great selection of wine and small bites that you can enjoy all night long as regulars stop in to sip and savor.

Best Organic Grocery Store: The Big Carrot

It's not cheap but I love the selection of local organic food.  I'll miss my regular visits to the dispensary for supplements and the green juice and matcha almond milk lattes from the Juice Bar.

Bob's Juice Bar

Best Salad: Live Food Bar Kale Caesar Salad

Quite possibly my favourite salad ever.  I could happily eat this big bowl of kale and mixed greens topped with sundried tomatoes, eggplant 'bacon', dulse, sprouted grain croutons, cashew hemp parmesan and caesar dijon dressing for every meal.
